Winter Woods by Leon Sarantos

Winter Woods
My Winter Woods painting is on display at the Oliver Brown Art Show. Winter Woods is an impressionist-influenced painting of trees in twilight that portrays a winter landscape inspired by skiing in the Chicago forest preserves.  The trees in winter are stark brown against the pink twilight reflected off the white snow with blue shadows. The palette is composed of an extreme gradation from light to dark color values.  Heavy lines running across the canvas create shapes by themselves that are independent of the scene being represented.
